Never mind the experts, never mind what they taught you in school, and never mind your competitors, put a stake in the ground and define the purpose of your web site. Then make it deliver that functionality. Don’t get lost in layers of pretty design or unnecessary technology.
What defines a good web site? Have you ever been on a web site trying to do something that you were supposed to be able to do on that site and couldn’t? That’s not a good web site then. It doesn’t matter how pretty it is, how much time went into the color scheme, or how efficient the JavaScript code is that makes the pretty little rollover buttons, if I can’t find what I need, then it’s not a good web site, it’s a bad web site.
Ok then, what’s a bad web site? Have you ever been on a site that looked like a 4th grader made it? Ugly font choices, strange colors, plain links instead of pretty buttons and Flash animation? But, did you find what you were looking for? Did you get the information you were after? If so, it’s a good web site.
I can’t say it enough: functionality is more important than looks. Let me say it one more time: functionality is more important than looks. People will not stay on a web site that is hard to use, or come back to a web site that does not work. However, your web site can be both functional and good looking; all it takes is proper planning and quite possibly less work than a more complex, over done layout.
Have you ever been driving down a back country road and have a deer run out in front of you? The deer just stands there staring at your headlights and he or she doesn’t know which way go. Don’t do this to your web site visitors.
Don’t present them with 103 choices and flashing lights, buzzers, and whistles when they land on your home page.
Your visitors may never make the choices that you want or that you assume they will. Keep each page focused and simple. Don’t make someone work to purchase something from you, it should be easy for them.
One way to create better pages is to minimize the use of packages like Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe GoLive, or DreamWeaver and do more of your coding by hand. Learn enough HTML so that you can start a page in one of these layout packages (if necessary) and then finish and maintain the page in a text or HTML editor. You’ll understand your pages better and you’ll know how they work. Plus, you can modify them faster.
I’ve built a lot of sites and it’s easier to modify and change the ones that I’ve coded by hand as opposed to the few that were built entirely in a layout package. Why?
Because layout packages like FrontPage change over time.
When you open a site you created in layout package “x”
version “n” two years later in version “n+1″ and it no longer looks like it should, you’ll understand why I like to edit my own HTML! Or, when you spend hours trying to get something to line up correctly in a layout package and finally start looking at the HTML code and realize that it’s a mess and redo it by hand in half the time without the problems, then you’ll understand why I like to edit my own HTML! But the main reason is that once you understand and can edit HTML, it’s easy to just do it by hand!
If your site is supposed to sell something then make sure it’s focus on is on selling, if it’s an information site, then make sure it’s focus is on providing information. If you want both, then maybe you should create two sites. Your goal should be clean, simple, and functional web pages that deliver the content or service the web site was intended to provide.

Learn How To Make Web Page Scripts and Create Interactive Web Pages. www.WebScriptingOnline.com. Created by Fred Black.
Do you guys think this is good so far? And if it is it school apropriate for an 8th grader?(read attached)?
this is a total of 2.1 (about) pages of my writing so far tell me if its good or bad and what I can improve and if it is school appropriate for an 8th grader. (the main story line is assassinating a corrupt russian spy president (of the USA))
In the year 2067 U.S.A went to war with Russian. The Soviet Russians have bombed U.S.A 4 times and the cities are leveled and smoldering. The reasons for these bombings are that United States have elected a Russian spy, Vladimir Smirnov, as president. Now the only men who can stop this war and put and end to the presidency of Vladimir are sitting in a Saloon seventy six miles east of Los Vegas, Nevada. One a former United States Navy Seals veteran, Raphael Gorski, he served in the Navy Seals for 12 years until he was disengaged after accidently guiding a Predator Airstrike into ally territory. Another is, Giovanni DeVito, a Mafia hit man until the war and the rest of his Mafia was killed in an explosion. The last one is, Reynold Smith, a computer hacker formally in the Green Berets until the war. They sat in the Saloon and talk…
“Ya know this war here is really Mr. President’s fault right guys?” asked Reynold. “Boy, are you crazy using ‘fault’ he’s the cause of it if we hadn’t elected him as the president we wouldn’t be in this mess and we all wouldn’t be sittin’ here and discussin’ this would we?” responded Raphael. “We need to take him down… but, we need a reason to so we won’t be hunted like dogs once we do… whether we do it the civilized way or the Mafia way we need to do it,” said Giovanni.
“If we’re gonna pull this off we are gonna need guns and a form of transportation from here in Nevada to Washington DC,” commented Reynold. They all looked at Raphael as he finished his chicken leg. “Listen, I can’t get guns any more remember? They think I leveled that American base up in the Middle East on purpose not ‘cause that computer slipped up for one little second!” Raphael pointed out. “Doesn’t mean I can’t remember I was in the Green Berets and the facts that I never did anything like mister PC slip up over here and I have a license to purchase weapons over .45 caliber,” pointed Reynold. “P.S. guys remember my arsenal of Thompsons, .38s, shotguns, and don’t forget my stilettos…” Giovanni added in. At that they got up and went out side. The surroundings appeared to be a post-mortem ghost town. Empty home, broken telephone lines and a few stray cars. “Well, all we gotta do is find a car that works and get ourselves back to my place in Los Vegas and get my stuff and head east,” sighed Giovanni. Before he finished Raphael wandered up to the nearest car which happened to be a faded blue ’97 Cadillac and removed his shirt and wrapped it around his hand in a fist and shattered the driver side window. He reached and unlocked the door to reveal black leather interior. Giovanni walked over and said, “Let me take it from here.”At that he jumped in the car and hotwired it and listened to the engine roar into life.“I had to do this over twenty times back in my Mafia days… come to think of it those where the hardest times of my life… why did I ever join them…” Giovanni interjected.
At that they road off into the once bright sky of Los Vegas. It was nine thirty one PM Pacific time when there plot came into play at Giovanni’s Apartment back up in “bad part” per say of Los Vegas.

What is a good transition for a 9th grader to use when writing an expository essay?
I just need one to start my conclusion paragraph with, and I’m not using finally ’cause that’s not accepted by my teacher.
Is Your Memory As Good As a 5th Grader?
Is Your Memory As Good As a 5th Grader?
If you got five-minutes, you can discover how to remember
abstract (tough-stuff) permanently. We teach this long-term memory
strategy to ten-year olds (5th graders) and they get it. How about it?
Now if your life centers on ditch digging – this is not a big-deal.
But if you are involved in the Knowledge Economy as an executive or
entrepreneur, student or smart-ass, maybe this five-minutes is worth
your while.
Tell me, just between us, when was the last time you learned something
practical for your brain’s sake? Let’s do it, huh?
What
Facts: our DNA & RNA are made up of five chemicals (molecules) called Nucleotides. Without them we all D-I-E.
Yeah, we know you forgot any science along with algebra and Shakespeare ten-years ago, but this memory game is called recall – not using the knowledge.
Facts: the five chemicals to be remembered in order are:
1. Adenine 2. Guanine 3. Cytosine 4. Uracil 5. Thymine
How
For inquiring minds: this strategy combines Visualization (creating mental pix)
and Association (links). Your job is to link (associate) the 5 mental pix in your
3-lb coconut.
Step 1: we come up with baby-easy words that SOUND-LIKE these abstract, hard
to pronounce and remember five-words. Why? When we remember the easy word
substitutes, they drag into consciousness the tough words we want to remember.
Remember – this is a memory strategy, not meant to gain comprehension about the science of these five Nucleotides (whatever that means). You care? Google it.
Step 2: the visualizations and the substitution with baby-easy words.
a) How do you remember the term: Nucleotides?
Imagine, using your mind’s eye a nuclear bomb explosion –
in the ocean tide. See it now and remember it.
b) Adenine: remember Add-Nine (+9) and link those two words to your original mental pix of the nuclear bomb in the ocean tide.
c) Guanine: remember Gong+Knee. Create a mental pix of a bronze
disk or bell that makes a musical sound. Aha, it is attached to your
left-knee and rings when your clamp both knees together. Link the
“gong-knee” to the “add-nine”. That is association.
d) Cytosine: remember: Sy (Simon) Seen. Simon is looking through binoculars, get it? Now associate “Sy-Seen” with “Gong-Knee”.
e) Uricil: remember: “You-Are-a-Window-Sill” See yourself (mentally) lying flat under the window. Why? Because ‘you-r-a-window-sill’. Now, associate (link) “You-R-A-Sill” to “Sy-Seen”.
f) Thymine: remember “Thigh-Meet” In Kentucky Fried Chicken,
where the “thigh meet” the chicken-feet. Now associate “thigh meet” with “You-R-A-Window-Sill”.
So What
See the Visualization and Associations in review.
I see the nuclear bomb going off in the tidewater = nucleotides.
First, visualize “Add-Nine” to “Nucleotides.
Second, visualize “Gong-Knee to “Add-Nine”.
Third, mentally see: Sy-Seen linked to Gong-Knee.
Fourth: See: “You-Are-A-Window-Sill” to “Sy-Seen”.
Fifth: visualize “Thigh-Meet” to “You-R-A-Window-Sill.
Now I visualize the initial-letters of the keywords in order:
“A-G-C-U-T” (Ag-Cut).
A (Adenine), G (Guanine), C (Cytosine), U (Uracil), T (Thymine)
Why Does It Work
You are concentration your attention on making mental pictures and
associations (links) between our funny-words. Silly is better than literal for
purposes of memory.
Your brain is where your inner-child resides and he/she loves silly,
ridiculous, out of proportion, substitutes, colors, senses, & 3-D images.
Our brain remembers the abnormal, not the boring normal stuff.
Which is more memorable, driving silently on a country road, or stopping
to gawk at a highway accident where two decapitated heads are rolling
around the lanes?
Your brain loves to freak itself out remembering the weird and ridiculous.
Always create mental images for long-term visualization and association -
that are weird and outlandish. Got it?
More
Your brain is divided into two hemispheres, a left and right brain.
The left-brain (hemisphere) is usually dominant. It is attracted to
logic, reasoning, spelling, numbers and language.
Our right brain (hemisphere) specializes in music, emotions (limbic
system), imagination, and pattern recognition. It is not either/or because
your left and right brains work together, each adding its own
specialization.
The two halves communicate through a structure called
the Corpus Callosum (< Latin: firm body). Google: hippocampal
commissure, and anterior commissure for hemispheric communication.
Endwords
The secret to long-term memory success is doing (repetition), not talking
about a new strategy that make remembering information baby-easy.
If you go out and teach this system to an underprivileged kid, you will
change his/her life forever. Guaranteed – you are going past Purgatory and
straight to St. Peter at the gate. Send him my regards cause I’m going the
other way.
Take this teaching assignment and you will double (2x) your own long-term
memory permanently. See ya.

My son ran track last year as a 7th grader. He was really good – broke records etc. Now he doesn’t want to run?
I think he may have an anxiety or panic disorder. He was so nervous before races that he’d ask if he could leave – but once they were over he was fine again. His coaches have said that he is exceptional … the highschool coach is already watching him. He may even be college scholarship potential … although I know that is down the road. I’d hate to see him quit. How do I convince him to face his anxiety?
I knew everyone would think he’s being pushed … he knows that we don’t care if he wins or loses. He’s been good at sports before and bad before. It just seems so effortless for him … I expected him to start “throwing” races, but he never did, I guess he’s too competitive. Wouldn’t he always wonder what could have been … wouldn’t he blame me if I let him quit?
To jeff b: I appreciate your response b/c you’re a coach, but I don’t think he’s burnt out. He ran for the first time last year and the season only lasted from April to early June. They practiced two 2hr days and 2 1hr days – less really counting time to change and leave to catch the bus. He was so excited when he was chosen to go to the Penn relays – they took 3rd and won medals. He runs the 100, 400 and 4×100 … currently he is not involved in any sports …
Whats a good narrative eassy topic for a 6th grader I dont want one that is overly used, any sugestions?
I have to write a narrative eassy but it cannot go over 24 hours. All I need is like a quick thing like my first day at the park. (over used)
Note:Narrative is a true story that happens to me…Sorry! You said some good topics but they are not a narrative thingy
Lemony your idea is awesome thanks!
Is this a good thesis statement for a Robert Frost paper?
In his works, “The Road Not Taken,” “Come In,” and “Acquainted with the Night,” Robert Frost uses alliteration, similes, and onomatopoeias to attract readers.
–
Maybe I should change it up some? Use different words?
What do you think of it? Any suggestions about changing it?
Does it sound ok for a 9th grader or should I work more on it?
