Off road tires are different from the conventional tires because these tires are not meant for normal asphalt roads. Off the road vehicles include wheel loaders, backhoes, graders, trenchers, as well as large mining trucks, with four-wheel drives.

The major function of tire is providing traction. For the normal vehicles, tires perform the gripping function against a smooth and gravel surface. Three major OTR tires are used with the off-the-road, four wheel drive vehicles for best result in three different road conditions.

If the vehicle is driven both on the highway and off the highway on a regular basis then the all-terrain tires is the best option for such driving. All-terrain tires feature a tread design with exclusive interlocking tread elements which can generate better range of traction on slippery roads caused by snowfall, mud, or due to the dry snow accumulation. All-terrain tires are the most inexpensive variety of OTR tires that also offers best longevity among all the variants.

If you mostly drive on off- the- road trails then the mud-terrain tires will be the best option for you. These off road wheels are available with larger lugs and aggressive tread patterns which offer a better grip along with providing optimum balance and stability for the vehicle. Mud terrain tires are best options for snowy, extremely muddy, and wet terrains. These kinds of OTR tires are exceptionally durable with extremely-tough sidewalls for smooth absorption of shocks caused by rocks, pebbles, and other common off road hazards. However, these OTR tire varieties are comparatively more expensive than the all- terrain variety. And as the traction of the tires gets into heavy use, its service life is shorter than the average all-terrain tires.

The snow-tire variety on the other hand, is the best option for safe driving on the snow-covered trails. The specialty of snow tires is their long retaining softness even in subzero temperature. These off the road custom wheels have multiple numbers of grooves and channels on each of the tire body known as sipes. Due to the presence of sipes on the tire body, snow-tires can provide improved traction and protection against the extremely slippery conditions of the terrain.

2008 Crisis Resonse Hero

Between December 21, 2007 and January 29, 2008 a total of 153 inches of snow fell in Detroit, Oregon…and that was just the beginning. Detroits Emergency Preparedness Commissioner Ed Bowman had been checking in on elderly and disabled community members before the storms hit as part of his preparedness and disaster response plan. He delivered a bleak report to City Hall. Driveways were blocked, residents were trapped in their homes and snow laden roofs were in danger of collapsing. Berms along city streets were 10 feet tall, there was only one road grader and two snowplows in town, but it didnt matter, there wasnt anywhere to put the snow. Things were just as bad, if not worse, in Detroits sister city of Idanha. It was clear that help from outside was needed and Bowman led the way. Working with Idanhas Mayor Karen Clark, Bowman helped to initiate a State of Emergency with Marion County Emergency Manager John Vanderzanden. Bowman also initiated contact with his favorite TV station asking for coverage on their situation. Those actions began a rapid progression of public awareness and emergency response activities, which would consume Bowmans coming weeks, and most importantly, bring badly needed aid to the two communities. Days later, Governor Kulongoski declared a State of Emergency in Lake, Linn and Marion counties due to severe winter storms.
